You don't need more friends. You need a third place.

Published June 9, 2026 · HMNTY — Find things to do. Meet people who go.

When people tell me they're lonely, they almost never mean they don't know anyone. They usually know plenty of people. They have coworkers, a couple of old friends across town, a group chat that lights up twice a year. What they're missing isn't people. It's a place to keep running into them.

There's a name for that place. A sociologist named Ray Oldenburg called it the "third place" — not home (the first place), not work (the second), but the somewhere-else where life happens loosely and on purpose. The coffee shop where the regulars know your order. The court where the same crew shows up Tuesday nights. The bar trivia table that's been yours for three years running. Third places are where you become a regular, and being a regular is most of what friendship actually is.

Here's the uncomfortable part: a lot of us don't have one anymore.

We traded our third places for a feed

Think about where the third place used to live. Bowling leagues. Church basements. The neighborhood diner. The corner bar. Over the last twenty years a lot of that quietly closed, moved online, or got priced out. And the thing that rushed in to fill the gap was a phone.

The phone is very good at making you feel like you're in touch. You can see everyone's vacation, everyone's dinner, everyone's kid's first day. But scrolling past someone's photo is not the same as standing next to them while the game goes long. A feed gives you the information of a friendship without any of the texture. You know what your friends are doing. You're just never there.

That's the trap, and an algorithm has no reason to get you out of it. The feed is built to keep you watching other people live. We built HMNTY for the opposite — to get you off the screen and into the room. Real plans, real people, no algorithm deciding who you're allowed to see.

A third place is a thing you do twice

The good news is you don't have to find your people. You have to find your place, and the people come with it. And a place is just a thing you do more than once.

That's the whole move. Pick something that repeats — a run club, a pickup game, a weekly trivia night, the same patio every Thursday — and go back. The first time you're a stranger. The third time you're a regular. Somewhere in there, without anyone deciding it, you have friends. Repetition does the work that no amount of "we should hang out sometime" ever will.

Summer in Omaha makes this almost unfair. The barrier to a third place is usually effort and cost, and right now the city is handing you free, recurring reasons to show up: Jazz on the Green, farmers markets every weekend, league nights, free movies in the park, ten days of College World Series energy spilling out of the Old Market. The hard part — a reason to be in the same place as other people — is already solved. You just have to keep coming back to one of them.

How to actually start

Pick one thing this week. Not five. One. Something on a schedule, so showing up again next week is a default instead of a decision.

Then go a second time. Most people quit a third place after one visit because nothing magic happened, but nothing magic is supposed to happen the first time. You're not there to make a friend on day one. You're there to become familiar — to be the face people start to expect.

And if the thing you want doesn't exist yet, make it. The Thursday patio, the Sunday morning walk, the monthly board-game night — third places don't have to be institutions. Most of them started because one person picked a time and kept the lights on. On HMNTY, that's a single post: name the plan, pick a time, and the people nearby who'd come tap "I'll be there." Do it twice and you've built the thing you were looking for.

You don't need more friends. You need a place to keep running into the ones you're about to make.
