Things to do in Omaha tonight: a plan for every night of the week

Most "things to do in Omaha" lists are built for a Saturday you planned two weeks ago. This one is for 5:40 on a Tuesday, when you're done with work, you don't feel like going home yet, and you'd like a plan that starts in about an hour and doesn't require a ticket, a reservation, or a group text that nobody answers.

Omaha is unusually good at this. A lot of the best stuff here is standing — it happens the same night every week, it's free or close to it, and the people who go are used to strangers walking in. Below is the week, night by night. Times were checked September 25 against the organizers; weekly events drift, so a quick look at the venue's page before you leave is worth it.

Monday

Monday is trivia night in Omaha, and it's the best night to try one if you've never been. QuizBang at Zipline Brewing (721 N. 14th, downtown), America's Pub Quiz at Scriptown (3922 Farnam, Blackstone), and Trivia Mafia at Vis Major Brewing (3501 Center) all run Mondays. Trivia Riot at Mellow Mushroom goes 6:30 to 8:30. Trivia is free to play, teams of two are allowed, and it's socially acceptable to show up with one friend and get absorbed into a bigger table. If you'd rather listen than answer, North Omaha Music & Arts runs a free live jazz show on Mondays followed by an open session.

Tuesday

Edge of the Universe in Benson (6070 N. Maple) does themed trivia on Tuesdays, and the theme changes weekly, which is the good kind: a Parks and Rec night draws a different crowd than a general-knowledge night. Goldeez (5502 N. 103rd) and Brickway Brewery & Distillery (1116 Jackson, Old Market) also run Tuesday trivia. If you'd rather move, Kros Strain Draft Works downtown hosts a run/walk/bike check-in on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8, which is the lowest-pressure run club in town because "walk" is on the sign.

Wednesday

Wednesday is the sleeper. The Backline Comedy Theatre (1618 Harney) runs its open mic every Wednesday: doors at 7, thirty-plus comics, free to watch, full bar, no drink minimum. It's the best cheap night out downtown that most people who live here haven't done. Red Lion Lounge has free live jazz on Wednesdays with the Red Lion Quartet. For trivia, The Rusty Nail and Bärchen Beer Garden both host America's Pub Quiz at 7.

Thursday

Thursday is Omaha's real Friday. The Joslyn Art Museum stays open until 8 on Thursdays and admission is always free, so you can walk the new building after work and still have the evening. Scriptown Running Club leaves the brewery in Blackstone at 6 for the Field Club Trail, then comes back for $2 off a first pint; all paces, nobody's checking your watch. Through October, Little Riot in Benson (6201 Maple) is doing free rooftop movies every Thursday at 7:30, 21+ (Beetlejuice on the 1st, Scream on the 15th, Halloween on the 29th).

Friday

If it's the first Friday of the month, go to Benson. Benson First Friday is free, year-round, and turns Maple Street into gallery openings, an artist market, live music and a crowd that's easy to fall into. October's is October 2. On any other Friday, the Old Market is the default for a reason: you can walk it with no plan, and something is happening in at least one of the bars on Howard Street. Spielbound (33rd and Harney) is open until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; a $5 day pass gets you the whole board-game library, and it is the single easiest place in Omaha to spend three hours with people you just met.

Saturday

Start at the Omaha Farmers Market in the Old Market, Saturdays 8 to 12:30, running through October 11 this year, so three Saturdays left. On the third Saturday of the month, Dundee puts live musicians on the sidewalks from 6 to 8. The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and the RiverFront parks are free, lit at night, and a better after-dinner walk than anything you'll find on a list of "date ideas." Sunday

Aksarben Village Sunday Market, 9 to 1, also through October 11. After that, Sunday is the quietest night of the week in Omaha, which makes it the best night to host something small: a board game night at Spielbound, a walk across the bridge, a two-person plan to try the ramen place you keep driving past. Sunday plans get more yeses than you'd expect, because everyone else is also sitting at home wishing they had one.

The actual trick

You'll notice the list above doesn't solve the hard part. The hard part isn't knowing that trivia is on Monday. It's that at 5:40 you don't have anyone to go with, and the group text about "we should do something" has been dead since June.
